I suppose you need something like this:
Code:
while read eachline
do

  VAL=$(
    printf '%s\n' "$eachline" |
      sed  -e 's/[^/]*$//' -e 's/default/default_new/'
      )

  cp -r -- "$eachline" "$VAL"

done < /user/oracle/Test_admin/myfolder/bakup/part_bkptemp_part_bkp_repeated/list.txt

The main error was in the following line:

Code:
VAL=$eachline| sed  -e 's/[^/]*$//' -e 's/default/default_new/'

In this case the assignment VAL=$eachline returns nothing but its return status,
so the rest of the code is meaningless: the cp gets two (or more, given you didn't quote the variables) arguments with the same value.

Something like this:

Code:
% for x in 1 2; do
v=$x | sed 's/1/2/'
echo cp $v $x
done
cp 1 1
cp 2 2

Thus you need command substitution: $( ... ).
