We need a lot more information to be able to help! Which flavour of UNIX do you wish to install? I assume Linux of FreeBSD (seeing as you're using an Intel system), and if so the answer is "yes". A search of this site, google, and tldp.org will give you all the information you need. Also; how are your disks currently partitioned? Do you have a spare partition? Do you need to resize partitions to make room for *NIX? If so; what filesystem type is Windows XP residing on (FAT32 or NTFS)? If it's NTFS you're limited to very new Linux distributions in terms of partition resizing.

You really need to give a lot more information in your posts if you want to get a full and detailed response.....

Cheers

If your referring to GNU/LINUX or *BSD, please state that. If you mean UNIX, there are many brands of UNIX, UNIX is a trademark, not a single tangible product these days.
The list of UNIX OS's is very large, so it helps by giving an explicit product name. If your opting for GNU/Linux, the same can apply to this, please use a specific product name. Since there are about 500 various distributions of GNU/Linux. and for *BSD, there are about a dozen.
Think of it as asking for help with a automobile, if you state you need help with your auto, you have to include the make and model for more localized help.

It is different installing different versions of the *nix OS's. GNU/Linux uses a different filesystem(s) than *BSD. The installation routines vary among the different OS's. Simply setting up the partitions can be different, some make use of cfdisk or fdisk, some have special tools, like diskdrake.

With any question on any topic, the more information relative to the query supplied the better the reply can and will be.

Can you please list your PC specs? CPU speed, RAM, hard drive, how much space is free on the hard drive?
It's possible to "dual-boot" so that you can keep XP and use a *nix product.

Another product you may want to look at is VMware (you have to pay for it). WIth VMWARE , you can run *nix from within Windows.

Can you explain what exactly you are trying to learn? Maybe Cygwin would be good enough for you...please state your objective.

If you have a CDwriter and fast internet access, take a look at: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

There you can download Knoppix, a Linux distribution you can boot from CD-ROM. It's great if you want an introduction to Linux. It's a bit slow in using, after all it is working from CD-ROM.

There are alot of Live-CD's, like this, out there for various versions of *NIX. This is just my personal favorite.

Good Luck
