grep exact

FILE:
Code:
#test file#
server1        10.1.1.1
server2        10.1.1.2
server2-prv  10.1.1.3

Code:
grep -w "server2" {filename}

Returns:
Code:
server2        10.1.1.2
server2-prv  10.1.1.3

How would you just get it to return just the exact match line?:
Code:
server2        10.1.1.2

Thanks!

by using "server2 " ?
maybe egrep "^server2 " even
# 3
Old 07-07-2011
Code:
grep -w "server2 " {filename}

*note the space*

does not return anything

Well also I don't believe -w would work well with a space, since it matches words.

Code:
[mute@geek ~/test]$ egrep -e "^server2\s" file
server2 10.1.1.2

The "-" character is considered not part of a word... You could try:
Code:
awk '$1==s' s="server2" infile

with grep:
Code:
grep -E '^server2([[:space:]]|$)' infile
