The what and how to install UNIX on a new mac

Firstly, Happy New Year to all.

Secondly, my earnest request...

I am an absolute novice in UNIX.
Have work around alittle with the mac os Terminal which encourage me to get myself a used G3 powerbook. I would like to work full fledge installing a unix shell onto it (without GUI).
Could anyone recommend or drop me some good pointers to the what and how I can get it going.

Thank you.

What you can do is get a copy of mandrake linux, and go ahead and install that. Mandrake is pretty easy to install and use for a novice. Make sure to get the ppc version. Here is a good site: http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29

You could also try Yellow Dog Linux which is a complete RPM based linux distro specifically built for the PowerPC architecture - you can set this up to dual boot with your existing Mac OS installation.

osx has a built in shell for the unix environment(bash) and as far as i can tell there is no gui to it what so ever. osx is built on unix essentially. that is why all the rave about it.

Exactly, accessing thru the Terminal will get me into the unix environment. But quite habitually, I tend to switch back to the user interface for my daily chores. That is a problem for me, as a beginner.

Thanks zazzybob and phobos for the links, as i am writing, i am downloading YDL 4.0 -Orion installer (4 CD). Have read from its forum that many had glitches while installing them. Let's see how mine goes...

Cheers
