awk
Lets say we have a file called abc.txt and it's contents are -
Code:
HDR..
B1234..
D1234..
HDR..
T1234...
S1234..
HDR..
....

We would like to split this file into sub files starting with HDR word and about 100 HDR's in each file. how can we do this using awk in combination with /^HDR and a counter? Your help is appreciated.

No, I would like to split this file into several files and each of those sub files can have lets say 100 HDR records...

That awk script does more than you think, lines willl first go into HDR0, the next HDR line will start sending them into HDR1, etc.

Yes, I did see that but I would like to send x number(say 500) of HDR's into one file and then switch to next file... so on..

you'll run out of the max opened file descriptors very soon. E.g. Solaris' nawk has it set at 5 or 10 (I think)
