sed -i is used to make the changes to a original file

see the below example

Code:

bash-3.00$ echo "abc" > test.txt

bash-3.00$ sed 's/abc/efg/' test.txt
efg

bash-3.00$ cat test.txt
abc

bash-3.00$ sed -i 's/abc/efg/' test.txt

bash-3.00$ cat test.txt
efg

-i option stands for "in-place" editing. It is used to modify the file without the need to save the output of sed command to some temporary file and then replacing the original file. For example instead of:
Code:
sed 's/a/b/g' file > file.tmp; mv file.tmp file

you can do:
Code:
sed -i 's/a/b/g' file
