That 5.8 tells you that you have SunOS 5.8 aka Solaris 8.

To stop cron:

/etc/init.d/cron stop


To restart cron:

/etc/init.d/cron start


And by the way, there should be no reason to do this unless your own applications cannot have the year change.

cron job starts new cron proccess

I run cron in solaris 10 zone. One cron job which syncing files to nfs mounted on container, creates after finishing another cron proccess(/usr/sbin/cron), and after 100 existing cron proccesses next cron job will not start.
