Read a file

Hi
I have a file in which data is in this format
123456,112233445566,400,ABCDEF,790
123450,123456789798,300,QWERTY,987
.
.
.
I mean to say I want to read data until I encounter a comma.
So I want to read the file and read first 123456 and write it to file. Then read 112233....and so on.

Also if the user enters suppose 123456 then it should find in the file and then start reading the file from there.

Kindly let me know how to do it. I am totally new to UNIX.

I have a file in which text file in which data is in the format
Code:
123456,1234567890,400,QWERTY,112121
987654,2345678901,300,ABCDEF,987909

There are similar rows in the data file.

Now I have to write a code in which user shall enter the values in the first column or the 2nd column such as 123456 or 987654, 1234567890 or 2345678901.

So I will take this input from the user and find the text entered by the user and match it in the input data file.

If the text matches then I need to write the rest of the values in that row in a new file.

Hence what I need is,
1) How to perform search (I tried grep command but if I enter 123, it searches it and says "Item Present", though it is not.
2) I want to read the data in the file until I encounter a comma, this way I shall be able to write the rest of the values of the row into the output file.

I hope problem is clear.
Kindly help me.

use -w option in grep

1) get the input from user
2) pass the input value to the grep command with -w option

Code:

bash-3.00$ grep -w 123456 /tmp/myfile
123456,1234567890,400,QWERTY,112121
bash-3.00$ grep -w 123 /tmp/myfile
bash-3.00$

after that just re-direct the grep output to new file

Thanks again, but I wanted to know for my knowledge that how to read in a file until I encounter a comma.

And this is what I have written. I am asking the user to input and I am reading that input in a variable called locationCode

Code:
echo cmd = $(grep -w "$locationCode" inputFile.txt)
if [ "$cmd" != "0" ]; then
        echo "Correct Location"
else
           {
           echo "Loaction doesnot exist"
           rm outputFilefinal.txt
           exit
           }
fi

Will this work ??
