Had you posted the output of uname -a as I requested, I am pretty sure the that the machine class would have been "sun4v". This indicates hardware virtualization. That is, it is possible to define several sub-systems and each can be booted separately. Sun called each sub-system a logical domain. I don't know if Oracle has kept the name. The "firmware" then is the hypervisor that controls them all. When one of them needs to be booted the hypervisor either copies or maps (I'm not sure which) OBP to the sub-system and allows it to boot. And, yes, one sub-system can be at the ok prompt while another one is running Solaris.

We have T5120's. We do not partition them. But we still have to go through the hypervisor to get to OBP.
