Remove ^M (carriage return) with string manipulation
Hello, I want remove ^M at end of my files line
if I use command : tr -d '\r' <inp>out it work fine
but get I the same result by manipulating the string ?
I want this because in my text file I manipulate some other part

I have input "the cat^M"
I want output "the cat"

I have made test of code but don't work

text="the cat^M"
cleantext=${text/^M/}
or
cleantext=${text#^M}

Exist a solution???

Your problem is not clear, please give more detail.

If your input contain a lot of unexpected '\r' you can just remove them with tr -d '\r'
you can alernately use dos2unix inputfile inputfile

This will remove the '\r' from your inputfile as well.

why don't you just

text="the cat"

instead of

text="the cat^M"
?

Your code worked for me in bash. Are you sure the ^M in ${text/^M/} is a real control M, not two chars of ^ and M (try ctr-v ctr-m)? By the way, you should use % instead of # in your alternative method.
