Sort text file starting at column X
Hello everyone!

As the heading reads, I would like to sort the lines of a text file, starting at a specific column (i.e. skip the first X characters of each line).

What I’m actually trying to sort is the md5 sums file of a directory. Every time I copy a new file to that directory, I perform an md5 checksum of said file and append it to the md5 sums file. I thus would like to sort the file stating at column 35 (where the filenames start).

I’m guessing I should use the -k option of the sort command but I can’t get how it works…

Any help?

General Numeric Sort
I think you'll need the -g option to enable full numeric sorting. Here's a quick & dirty one-liner to sort clusters of duplicate files found by duff according to the size of the files in the cluster:

duff -r . | grep 'files in cluster' | sort -k2 -t'(' -g

How to sort a column in excel/csv file?

Can't sort file by size column
