'ls':Stop at end of screen
Hi

I'm new to this forum and want to say hello to all of you.
And now the (possibly) stupid part of my message:

Is it possible to force "ls" to stop at the end of the screen,
like the man-pages do?
It's really hard if you have a directory with more than 100 files
and the only thing you can see are filenames beginning with"x, y, z".
I already read the man-pages concerning the 'ls' command, but I could
not find anything.

Is there a good website for Unix-beginners ?

Try
ls | more
I believe this will do what you want, then you can just use the space bar to continue on one screen at a time or the return key to move down one line. I haven't tried it this way, I always use ls -l | more.

You can search this forum for the keywords "unix tutorial" and I am sure you will get plenty of threads talking about UNIX tutorial sites for beginners and more advanced users - I remember answering a few posts on this.
