Using sed to replace one string with other
hi,

I am using sed command to replace a string "prodops" with "psops" using the below command

Code:
sed 's/prodops.monitor@corp.earthlink.net//' test.ksh > test.ksh_temp

But when I do this permission on the test.ksh_temp file is different than the original file. See below

Code:
-rwxr-xr-x   1 kotrar   other       2568 Feb 15 04:38 test.ksh
-rw-r--r--   1 kotrar   other       2534 Feb 15 04:38 test.ksh_temp

Can anyone of you please help me in changing the permission of this temp file to be the same as the original file. I do not want to hardcode the permission value as 755 as I will be using this sed command inside a script to read multiple files. And different files will have different level of permission.

Is there a generic way to use chmod command to copy permission from one file to another file ?

Hi,

Not a sed problem, I think. Try:

$ chmod --reference=test.ksh test.ksh_temp

Thanks for the reply. But that does not work. I tried it and it gave the below error.

your chmod command does not support REFERENCE option. which OS are you using?

Also, check if your sed supports the -i option, so that you don't have to create a new file

Of couse, x (excute) permission is not default for new file.

You need update by :

chmod +x test.ksh_temp
