How to get hired as a Unix sys admin?

What do employers look for?
I have my B.S in Comp Sci and minor in chemistry from UNC.
But my GPA is a bit low (3.0)

I'm studying for my Sun Solaris 9 certification.

Is a certification and a Bachelors enough to get a job?
Or do you need some related work experience?

How hard is it to get a sys admin job?

Qualifications and certifications can certainly help but in my opinion if I had to choose between someone with qualifications/certification and someone with a good few years experience then I would always go with the experienced guys.

Certification can only take you so far, I don't think there is any substition for the real experience of having been there and done it..

Plus there is nowhere on the exam that prepares you for some dimwitted cowboy electrician pulling plugs out of and E4500 whilst trying to remove cabling from a server room just as your about to go home...

I agree

Most companies dont care about GPA... more about the degree and any experience you have.

Experience is the more important of certifications.

I had NO Degree when I got my first computer related job, When I got my current (2nd computer) job, which was as a Unix Admin, I still had NO degreee...but I was attending college at the time.

I had 2 1/2 years of some Unix experience back then. I was very much a newbie back then, but that bit of experience I had helped quite a bit.

And a good jobs market back in 2000 didnt hurt either.
