UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi All,
I am very new to the UNIX world and find myself in a new position at work that requires me to archive large CADD files based in both UNIX and Windows environments on CD's. I have one engineer that wants to export these files as a table (I guess) and it appears to have a lot of paper trails to tie it back to a file. One wants to use the MV command and simply move the files to cd's. What are some of your recommendations?

You can use the MV command to burn files to CD?? If this is for real, someone please tell me about that! That would make life simple.

In keeping with the rules, you can also tar up your files and save them to NFS shares. I used to do that with A and PTR files on a company DNS server a while back. I even wrote an extremely simple BASH script for it and put it in CRON to do this once a week. Do you have another machine available for storage of the files?

If you're looking to burn your backups to CDs, you could prolly use the aforementioned idea and set up a cron job to tar all of the files to be moved then use any of numerous CLI CD burning programs to automatically burn at a given time. Just pop in the next disc and away you go...
