Migrate NIS Unix to Linux, possible ?

Hello,

I'am working in a French school about a new project NIS.

Actually, I have a NIS server wich works on SunOS 5.6 , version 1.8. There are about 100 machines connected over ( with NFS mount).

I have to install a new NIS version 3.17 on Ubuntu LTS. Of the 100 existing machines, I want 25 of them link to my new NIS...

For the test, I injected the configuration files of NIS SunOS and run the command "make" to update NIS maps. The goal is to have the same configuration with a new domainname !

My question: have you ever done this? Is it better to create a new environment and to redo the configuration?

Many Thanks for your help Smilie

Usually Sun style NIS setups are VERY bad. They assume an age of LONG ago, where NIS was supposed to be the "all in all"... thus Sun likes to push ALL users and handles all map types... Good Linux distros, esp. SUSE (where NIS works best) have decent yp makefiles, etc. We converted our Solaris 7 based NIS about 9 years ago to SUSE... it's currently SLES 10 based... we couldn't be happier.

Recommendation, you DON'T want "everything"... again, if it's a typical Sun NIS, it's sorta stupid. Push the users out that make sense, don't push a host map (use DNS).. etc...

We just push passwd, group, netgroup and maps for our NFS automount maps.

If you're using SSH, one things we're looking at doing is invalidating our DES crypt hashes in the passwd map and moving to key login... for some added security.

Hi cjcox, thanks you Smilie

Actually, I use an NIS Ubuntu; but I know Suse and it is possible to use this OS.

Thanks for advices. I can use DNS for hosts resolution. I have some questions : is it possible add : passwd, group, netgroup and maps , without destroy existing files in my actually OS ? Example with the command : cp source destination. You have a procedure ?

Today, i want to re-test the injection Smilie
