arg list too long

I do ls -l ABC*, I get arg list too long message. This will not happen if ABC* has small no of files I believe 4000 files is limit. Any way of avoiding this.

I even tried like this

for i in `ls -l ABC*`
do
echo $i
done

Same problem.

Any solution would be great.

I am on HP-UX 10.20

Thanks in advance

re arg list too long

I am sorry if I was not clear ls -l * will work but if we do ls -l ABC* where file names like (ABC1, ABC2, ABC3 .... ABC4000 and ABC is not a directory) does not work.

find . -name ABC/* is not the desired as it works to show all files under ABC directory but we need to get files ABC*, if we use

find . -name ABC* it gives same problem as ls -l ABC*.

PXT however thanks for your reply.

Any solution would be great and thanks in advance for help.

Use "find . -name ABC\*" instead. The star is escaped this way, so the shell never sees it (the shell is where your error message is coming from).

You could also use grep with ls to get the file list you want:

ls -l | grep 'ABC'

i got few stupid ways to solve this problem.

let's say if u a files like:

ABC20010731xxxxx.xxx
ABC20010801xxxxx.xxx
ABC20010802xxxxx.xxx
ABC20010803xxxxx.xxx

if for the amount of files is more than 4000

u can specify what file you want to count or list
eg. ls ABC20010801* |more

maybe this is work also
list all the files in the directory
eg. ll -ltr |more

if only want to count the files in the dir, i think this is work also
eg. ls |wc -l
