UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

hi i have multiple rows of several outputs.

Code:

find: ./filename: Permission denied

i want to suppress the rows which say permission denied.

i was thinking of using awk for this

command | awk '( $3 != Permission denied) '

and it doesn't work. my skills are just novice level in sed, awk and any help would be really helpful. thanks.

my output sorta looks like this,

./.bashrc.sample

so i don't know what field Permission denied is in 2nd or 3rd but still does not work.

No need to use awk or sed, you can redirect the errors to /dev/null:

command 2>/dev/null

i tried

find -mtime -30 -print > /dev/null

now it only prints out lines containing Permission denied, opposite of what i wanted. thanks for reply.

find -mtime -30 -print 2> /dev/null

The reason this works is because the normal output and error messages are printed to two different files, standard output(FD 1) and standard error(FD 2). In a shell they'd both go to the same place, the screen, but you can still redirect them separately.
