Will this show contents of file

Hi Team,
I have a couple of questions. I happen to come across a code like this which i was asked to trouble shoot.

Any idea what these two do?

1.
Code:
cat $(file?File doesn't exist);

2.
Code:
mydir=/home/user/axa032;
echo $(mydir-/home/a2self);

Can some one help me with this ?

Thanks,
Kinny

There is not much worth to trouble shoot - best rewrite them.

1. could look like:
Code:
VAR=filename; if [ -f $VAR ]; then cat $VAR; else echo $VAR does not exist; fi

2. I am not sure what the writer of those lines was going to do.
