Question regarding strange FTP behaviour

Hello All,

Have had an FTP transmission stop dead in its tracks this morning and the invoked shell script still running hours later.

We have an FTP routine calls a remote site to deposit files on a daily basis. This morning the FTP didn't complete, but did connect to the remote service (as seen in our logs), however seems to have stopped mid-way in executing the commands from the ftp-batch job.

The ftp-batch job contains the following ...
Code:
user ***** *****
user ***** *****
put SRC-FILE1.cmp DST-FILE1.cmp
close
bye

The resulting FTP log looks like ...
Code:
Connected to A-DOMAIN.com.
220-
 ********************************* WARNING *****************************
This system is for use by authorized users only.
 ***********************************************************************
 Blah...blah....

230-User logged in, proceed.
Current Default Relationship - Recv: **** ****: *BINARY
        Get option: single
230
200 Port command successful.
150 Opening data connection for transfer.

Would anyone have any past experiences or suggestions as to WHY this may have occurred ??

We don't run an FTP deamon, so the extract of the log above is all I have to go by. It successfully logs into the remote service, then just stops - has me stumped.

Hope the above is understandable.

Cheers,
Cameron

What OS on the remote box + what ftp are you using?

Hi Jim,

Using native ftp on a HP-UX 11v2 system (no ftpd running).

Not aware of the remote OS at this stage - though suspect it may be a linux variant.

Cheers,
Cameron

Weird

This sounds like a weird one. Does it happen every time you do a transfer or just with this particular file set?

One thing I have seen before is when firewalls block the data port for FTP. So all your commands work, but the minute you start a transfer it barfs. Although I seem to remember that when that happens you don't receive the "150 Opening data connection for transfer.", but my memory gets fuzzy sometimes. Thought I'd throw it out there

Yeah. Check that both port 20 and port 21 are open on the firewall.

If it is not a firewall issue there are a huge list of possible causes. Some are:
1) Second computer in this FTP relay chain is hung.
2) Transient network break
3) Cisco routers with "jumbo packets" enabled.
4) Incorrect network speed/duplex settings. Expecially any "autonegotiate".
5) Duplicate IP address.

If is is not a firewall setting try a small block size e.g. "ftp -B 1". This will tell tell you wheter a router has erroneously negotiated "jumbo packets" which are known to hang FTP.
