This Works!

I hate to ask another question, but I have looked at the "cut" man page and cannot find the answer.

Why are you using -c2-; i.e., why doesn't -c1- work for the first character?

Thanks!

cut -c2- old > new

the '-c 2-' is actually a range specification, on Redhat, I looked at:
"info cut"
this gave me more detail than the man page and it explained that the -c option is used with a range, ie '1-' is the same as '1-[end of line]' and so allows for dynamic line lengths. the same way that '-8' is equivelent to '1-8' so the range '2-' is actually from the second character in the line to the end of the line.

hope this helps....
