help with new ubuntu

hi,
i have had it with windows. i downloaded ubuntu desktop edition on my c drive. i downloaded it on windows. when starting, it asks me if i want to start windows or ubuntu.
i have a question? when booting and installing for the first time it got to 63 percent and stayed there till i unplugged power and removed battery from laptop.
also, will ubuntu now be a totally separate os from windows. if my windows is infected with malware etc, will it affect ubuntu?
also my friend had difficulty connecting to net on his ubuntu. how do i connect to a wireless connection on ubuntu?
plz explain like ur talking to someone with lower than average iq. thank u.

I'm not sure what you mean by the first questions, but Windows malware won't affect Ubuntu because the file systems are very different. Ubuntu should connect to the Internet automatically, if you are connecting to a wireless network it might ask you for the network password once, but after that it will only need your user password.
