CRON Jobs

Hi,

I am a total newbie to all things Unix. I've worked out I need to set up something that will allow me to automatically backup a DB for me, the DB is for a foum system I run.

Now, I've only found out I need to use telnet for this, and worked out hwo to log into telnet today. From here I'm totally stuck, except I think the command will look somethign like this....

PHP Code:
15 02 * * * mysqldump --add-drop-table -u username -ppassword dbname backup_forum-$(date +%m%d%Y).sql
Is this correct?

When I log into telnet, I get a variable [$] sign. How do I go about entering the CRON job from that?

Many thanks,
Ed Ludlow

first choose the editor for editing the crontab with the following command (will use the vi editor)

EDITOR=vi
export EDITOR

then issue: crontab -e

this will open the crontab file for the user you are logged in as.. edit the file and then save and your crontab has been updated..

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, I'm a total newbie, and when I type in EDITOR=vi it gives me an error "command not found".

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Ed

Sounds like you might be putting a space between EDITOR and =

Enter it exactly like this - no spaces around the equals sign

Code:
EDITOR=vi
export EDITOR

What shell are you in? Various shells take variable settings differently. It sounds like you might be in csh. Try:

setenv EDITOR=vi

Cheers,
