UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello All.

I'm get the following messages posted to the /var/adm/syslog file ever second and not sure on how to stop the process.

May 14 15:50:52 a3360 bootpgw[10263]: version 2.3.5
May 14 15:50:52 a3360 inetd[347]: /etc/bootpgw exit 0x1

As said about this gets logged every second only thing that changes is the [10263] goes to [10264.....10268 etc]

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

First - the number changes because the old process dies and a new one starts so it gets a different pid.
Second - try man bootpgw - find out what it is - you might need it.
Third - has the system always done this or was something changed?
Fourth - I don't know SCO - I'm only going off the messages you post and experience with other UNIX OS - you may not get a good answer here as there haven't been many folks who jump on SCO questions. But, your second error message is done by the inetd process (showing that bootpgw exited). Either the process is restarted automatically if it dies by inetd or possibly it's in a file called inittab in /etc.

Check out the man pages for inittab, inetd, and bootpgw. It may give you more clues to what to look for.

RTM - thanks I will repost on the other page and look at the manual for the files you suggested.

The problem just started up a few weeks age after I was tweaking some other files but I can't recall what I tweak.

Newbie Here looking for some help with SCO 5.0.5

I'm getting the following messages posted to my /var/ad/syslog file every second.

Date time: a3360 bootgpw[16414]: version 2.3.5
Date time: a3360 inetd[347]: /etc/bootpgw: exit 0x1

then the 16414 changes to the next sequence 16415 etc, the [347] stays the same.

This process happens seems happen randomly any given day or time and just started a few weeks ago when I was trying to use Netscape.

Any help would be mosted appreciated. Thanks Craig
