rcp in SCO 5.0.7

I am installing 5.0.7 on an existing SCO network. The 2 other machines are using 5.0.5 and rcp works daily both ways between the 2 older machines.

However I cannot copy from either machine running 5.0.5 to the new 5.0.7 machine - "Permission Denied"

/etc/hosts is configured correctly
/etc/hosts.equiv has all 3 machine names listed
/.rhosts exists listing all common user names
Users are all valid on each machine and have superuser permissions.

I also copied /.rhosts to the users home directory but this makes no difference

All relevant directories have 777 permisions.

If I invoke the rcp from the 5.0.7 machine ie

rcp "5.0.5":/u/taylors/* .

This works

I wondered is security has been tightened up in 5.0.7

Thanks in advance

I can find nothing about a higher security for rcp on SCO - insure the following is done:

When establishing user equivalency for rsh rcp and rlogin remember that root plays by different rules: you must use a .rhosts file; hosts.equiv will NOT work for root.. Also note that entries in hosts.equiv or .rhosts must match the name that the other computer will be seen as- ping it to see for sure what name will be used. Use fully qualified names when necessary. Finaly .rhosts MUST be owned by the user (rooot for root logins) and be chmod 700
I would also suggest you look into scp instead of using rcp - see ssh basics

The user must own his .rhosts file for it to be effective.

RTm and PERDERABo

thanks for replies. I can ping relvant boxes so names are fine.

chmod'd .rhosts in / to 700 still no luck.

I am logged in as root when i try to rcp and root owns .rhosts.

Any other thoughts?

Can I just copy /etc/hosts and /etc/hosts.equiv and .rhosts from other boxes??

regards

Since you can ping each box from the other, /etc/hosts is ok or not needed. Since you are doing this as root, /etc/hosts.equiv will be ignored.

The .rhosts file must be in the user's home directory. Does root have a home directory of "/" ? Could some boxes be using DNS but not others? Try putting two lines in .rhosts, one fully qualified, and one not:
somehost
somehost.whatever.com

The check is being performed (typically, I don't use SCO) by a routine called ruserok(). Do a "man ruserok" and look for any clues.
