need help with awk
I have set variables and then exported
export xxx_DB etc
But I do not see why in my script this does not wrk, can sonehelp

Code:
pass=`awk -F: '$xxx_DB ~ /'$ORACLE_SID'/ {print $xxxx_ID}' $pwfile`

variable expansion does not happen inside ' '.
Code:
pass=`awk -F: -v xxx_DB=$xxxDB -v xxxx_ID=$xxxx_ID 'xxx_DB ~ /'$ORACLE_SID'/ {print xxxx_ID}' $pwfile`

Solaris try nawk, not awk.
If you have an older version of awk consult the man page on passing variables from the command line (the -v bit)

Variable not holding it's value in awk statement
Thanks for the post.... I have been trying to figure out
why my variable doesnt have a value in my awk statement


This doesnt work:

cat <file> | awk '{ if ( $1 == $variable ) print $0 }'

This works:

cat <file> | awk -v variable=$variable '{ if ( $1 == variable ) print $0)'

Just for reference...

Code:
awk -v variable="$variable" '$1 == variable' <file>

is the same thing (you don't need cat)
