what kind of UNIX

ok, so i want to figure out what type of UNIX i have and in this book im reading about it, it says that i can figure out what type i have by typing the command uname in the prompt. So i did this and it came up saying Darwin?? is that part of System V UNIX or BSD or do i have LINUX? if anyone can help me on this it will be muc happreciated

i can only assume you didnt install it so that would leave to believe 1 of 2 things.

1) your an employee and should ask your local unix administrator.

2) your a student and this is a homework questions.


edit:

after reading all of your previos posts the best help you can give yourself is reading the man pages for the commands you are trying to learn.

you say you are in highschool but at the same time you are asking what kinda os you are running..... this does not make sense.

highschool dont have shell accounts. so you would have to install the os yourself. if thats the case then you should already know which os you installed. if that is not the case then you are takeing some kinda class that gives you a shell account and you are just a bit curious which is fine.

you are most likely running some sort of linux but i cant be for sure because i dont use linux at all. but i am sure google.com will come up with a deffinetive answer real quick.

Darwin is designed by Apple. It is an unix-like operation system based on Freebsd. For further information, check www.apple.com
