Seach for part of string and replace whole word

I am trying to find words in a text with a certain ending with sed and replace them with themselves but wrapped in tabs
ex.: The fish swims in the water. -> searching for -ms ending
The fish <tab>swims<tab>in the water.

I've been trying all sorts of commands and get either an error message (sed 's/([^])-athon/\t\1\t/g' > try1
sed: -e expression #1, char 22: unterminated `s' command) or sed does not even find my word.
Who can help?

Does this do it?

Code:
>echo The fish swims in the water. | tr " " "\n" | sed "s/.*ms/~&~/" | tr "~" "\t" | tr "\n" " "
The fish swims in the water.

Thanks for your quick reply - somehow it goes off in the right direction but I still cannot get a tab before my search word. And it does not keep my lines of of the example words devided.
Could you explain to me what ~&~ does here? And what is the tr '~' doing?
Cheers

MySQL

See the following code:

Code:
echo The fish swims in the water. |sed -r "s/(.*) (.*ms)(.*)/\1\t\2\t\3/"

Output:
Code:
The fish swims in the water.

Code:
sed 's/\(.*\)[ \t]\+\(.\+ms\)[ \t]*\(.*\)/\1\t\2\t\3/g'
