Script to Rename Files

I wrote a simple script that converts my windows text files to unix, so that I can compare them to different unix files purposes of my project.

win2unix file1.txt file1Win.txt
win2unix file2.txt file2Win.txt
etc

Is there a way to simplify this to:

<while .txt in directory>
win2unix <filename>.txt <filename>Win.txt

So I don't have to retype each filename in the script when I have new files for it. I want each converted file to have "Win" added to it so I know it is converted. I just can't a command or character that "maintains" the name of the previous filename so I can add to it. Thanks!

You can use a loop, or if you don't mind a little alteration to your desired filename:

Code:
ls *.txt | xargs -I{} win2unix {} Win{}

Of course running this multiple times will give funny names (WinWinFile1.txt, etc), so mayve:
Code:
ls *.txt | grep -v ^Win | xargs -I{} win2unix {} Win{}

Works great. I'm not completely clear on the syntax, but my other script performs a diff between each unix and win file:

Code:
diff file1.txt Winfile1.txt
diff file2.txt Winfile2.txt

I imagine it's something like

Code:
ls *.txt | xargs diff{*(^Win).txt *Win}  ???

It needs to diff every non-Win file with every Win-file that shares the same name (minus the "Win" of course). And they are stored in order in the directory (none of my files start alphabetically below "W" ) if it helps any.

/ls *.txt

file1.txt
file2.txt
...
Winfile1.txt
Winfile2.txt
...

Thanks again Smilie

You have to diff every file for what reason?

I would expect the Windows files to be different from the UNIX ones.

I'm porting a program to unix and verifying that its output files are identical to the windows outputs. I am new to unix scripting commands so it has been a learning experience for me.

I think you need to do this bit in a loop (not with xargs)

i.e.
Code:
ls Win* | while read FILE; do
  diff "$FILE" "${FILE#Win}" >/dev/null || echo "$FILE is different"
done
