i want to find out the sum of a column in vi/vim not by using any other editor or filter like sed/awk. Is there any function available to do the sum of a column.

People tend to forget that vi is a text editor. If you want spreadsheet functionality, you'll always have to use external programs like awk, or install OpenOffice.

The vim editor provides a facility for vim-scripts that may use vim-defined primitives.

The site welcome home : vim online has a search option. Looking for sum produced a number of hits. Doing arithmetic in vim is not trivial, but at least one of the hits displays code that will do a sum. I have not tested it, however, I have only looked over the vim-script.

We can't achieve this with in the vim. There is no functions keys and commands in vim.

But we can add the field count using sed,cut,tr, etc.,
