Can I copy files on remote server with ftp ?

Can I copy files on remote server with ftp ?
I just realize the only way is to download and upload again.. is not possible to copy them remotely with the ftp protocol ?

You can use rcp for this.

Provided that one ftp account has permissions to both read from the source directory and write to the destination directory you can ftp files within the same computer.
To copy files from one ftp account to another ftp account on the same computer would either mean setting up a ftp proxy server on the target computer or perhaps making use of some intermediate workspace on the remote server and coping each file twice.


Off topic:
Is this the same server which you can only access with ftp? Your recent posts suggest that you expect ftp to offer the same options as a full shell user.

We assume that all computers involved are running unix. Any chance that you can get a proper unix shell account with rcp, remsh etc.?
