Question average of a column in a table

Hello,

Is there a quick way to compute the average of a column data in a numerical tab delimeted file?

Hi.

Yes. But some more information would be useful.

For example, to average the first column of a file:
Code:
awk '
 { TOTAL += $1 }
  END { print TOTAL / NR }
' input_file

but it doesn't account for headers, footers, etc...

I realized the question had been discussed in an earlier posting. The solution provided pretty much used awk as you did and I implemented the same.
