UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I have 2 directories I want to compare for like files. One directory has 2 subdirectories associated with it, the other directory does not. When I do the dircmp -s I should get only a few files different between the two directories. I do, but the directory with subdirectories prints out all these differences. How do I only compare the one level of the directory that are in common?

I would like to make this output a report, but if I do a sed for the subdirectory name, it takes the whole line out and if there is any different file name from the second directory on the same line, it also gets deleted. Is there a simplier and quicker way to compare a directory of files for differences in the files? I do run this in a do loop as I have multiple similiar duplicate directories so any solution would have to lend itself to multiple compares which is why I use dircmp.

Do your "find" support -maxdepth ?

my system unfortunately does not support find -maxdepth and if I try
find -depth 1 it is no good either.. thanks for the quick response..

if all files are no space in file name, you can use below command:
