If you are going to be running a FreeBSD system (judging from your other post) I would recommend the FreeBSD handbook. It is available on-line at www.freebsd.org/Handbook.

It is very well written and free.

I started reading The Art Of Unix Programming the other day. It's a neat read.

That is excellent! It should be required reading for any programmer.

While I like it, that is because of its entertainment value. I would not call it required reading. But your mileage may vary.

Great site the programming one is!!

I have that "Unix System Administration Handbook" (the RED book) by Nemeth/Snyder/Seebass/Hein. 2nd ed. but there is a 3rd ed. out a few years ago.

It is great resource for new unix users... very nice layout.

I forgot about that one.

I picked it the Red version at 75% Off Books in Plano a few years ago for a whoppin' $5. I pull it out every once in a while.

Another good older book is "Unix Hints & Hacks" by Waingrow. Covers SysV and BSD systems with good tips and information.

I have the 3rd Edition. I know the 2nd Edition covered 6 Unix variants. Which are they? In the 3rd Edition there are only 4: RHL, FreeBSD, Solaris and HP-UX. I'm curious to know as it's no longer mentioned in the 3rd edition.
