Question Which flavour?

Hi folks,

First post so be gentle with me Smilie I've decided it's about time I got down and dirty with Unix, so have jumped in at the deep end and am downloading Redhat as an option to Win2000 on my Intel machine. Should be fun (!), but if I remember right there's options of which type of Linux..Gnome, KDE (?) etc.

The question is, what do people recommend for a complete beginner with Unix who is very familiar with general PC/computer technology? And do people think I'm doing the right thing starting with Redhat as opposed to other flavours/
is Linux a bad starting point full stop?

Cheers,

Natalie

Hi,

Red Hat provide a pretty good Linux distribution although you'd probably be better off using Linux Mandrake if you're a complete beginner to Linux.

You can purchase Mandrake cds relatively cheaply at the following sites:

http://www.linux123.co.uk/
£10 for 5 cds

http://www.crazypenguin.co.uk/
£4.40 for Mandrake 8 double pack

I'm running FreeBSD, Mandrake 7.2 and Mandrake 8..0 at the moment.

I like slackware because I've been using it since the linux kernel was at the 0.8 or .9 release. I also have tried others, but for me, slackware is like an 'old shoe' it just fits me and feels good. Too many GUIs make is hard for me to install other distributions, but I think many users really like the added GUIs during install.

Having said that, I will continue to use slackware for the forseeable future Smilie
