I want to have all hex color codes in a given stylesheet in uppercase, so #fff should be converted to #FFF for instance. Here is the regular expression I use to match and convert hex color codes to uppercase:

sed -e 's/^#([0-9a-f]{3}$)|([0-9a-f]{6}$)/^#([0-9A-F]{3}$)|([0-9A-F]{6}$)/' main.css

However, no conversion to uppercase takes place. How can I achieve this?

using GNU sed, this could be:

Thank you, your regex looks indeed a lot more concise. I am getting the error message that the -r option is not recognised:

What is the purpose of the -r option and how do I fix this in this case? I am running sed on FreeBSD 7.1.

if not supported, try this instead

sed -e 's/#[0-9a-f]\{3\}\|#[0-9a-f]\{6\}/\U&/'

but sed on freeBSD might not be GNU, and as such \U won't work.

Have a look at awk's toupper function

Thank you for your response and it seems that \U does not work indeed, as you suggested. The code works on Linux however.

I have looked into the tr function indeed, but thought that sed could do the same thing in this case. I just have a general concern about the use of regular expressions in the tr function, since "Most of the special RE codes do not apply in the tr function. ", so recognising hex color codes could be an issue.

UPDATE: Unless of course you mean that I first need to extract the hex color code, then pipe (|) it through to the tr function?
