script start and end of execution of time

Hi All,

Can we get to know the start time and end time of execution of a script? (This script doesn't write any logs.) I mean, is there any built in process logs to track these records?

I'm not aware of a built in process, but a common practice is to echo 'date' output into logs redirected from the process.

Code:
echo `date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S` > mylog; myprocess >> mylog 2>&1 ;echo `date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S` >> mylog &

If you're looking for total run time, you could use 'time'

Code:
time myproc

will return something like the following

Code:
real	0m0.000s
user	0m0.000s
sys	0m0.000s

I throw the date into a file in a log directory:
date > /log/bustart for example at the start of the backup routine
date > /log/bustop for the end
and name the stuff that happens sequentially in such a way that it lists the way it runs.
