Question How to get rid of ^[[D

Hi All,

Im selecting a large record from a table and putting it in a file in the unix box. The file has a hidden character "^[[D " present in it. Can any one help me in getting rid of the character

You can test around with something like:
tr -d '[[:cntrl:]]' < infile > outfile

That looks like three characters - depending on what you were using to view the file:
Escape (ctrl/[) , left square bracket , letter D .
(VT220 keyboard mapping for Left Arrow key).

Can you check somehow?
echo "${RECORD}" | sed -n l
# 4

This character mostly comes when you copy a file from windows to unix. In this case the character comes is "^D". Just try with
dos2unix <filename>.

This should remove those special characters.

Contrary to the above post, the character which you get oif you copy Windows text file to unix with binary ftp (not text ftp) is carriage-return "^M".

The OPs character string usually comes from pressing "left arrow" when entering or editing data in a program which is not set up correctly for your keyboard map.
