Question List-to-Range of Numbers

Hello,

I have two columns with data that look like this:

Col1 Col2
------ -----
a 1
a 2
a 3

a 4
a 7
a 8
a 9
a 10
a 11

b 6
b 7
b 8
b 9
b 14
b 15
b 16
b 17

c 88
c 89
c 90
c 91
c 92
c 95
c 96
c 97

I want to be able to get the range of the numbers in Col2 based on Col1, i.e. the output should look like this:

Col1 Range
a (1-4)
a (7-11)

b (6-9)
b (14-17)

c (88-92)
c (95-97)

Thank you in advance your input!

Hello,

First grouped by Col 1 and the second is group by an unbroken list of numbers sorted in ascending order from Col2.

Thanks!

Code:
oldcol1=""
oldcol2=""
while read col1 col2; do
  if [[ $col1 != $oldcol1 ]]; then
    if [[ $oldcol2  != "" ]]; then
      printf "$oldcol2)\n"
    fi
    printf "$col1 ($col2-"
  else
    if (( ( col2 - oldcol2 ) != 1 )); then
       printf "$oldcol2)\n"
       printf "$col1 ($col2-"
    fi
  fi
  oldcol1=$col1
  oldcol2=$col2
done<infile
if [[ $oldcol2  != "" ]]; then
  printf "$oldcol2)\n"
fi

infile is the name of the input file

Thanks Scrutinizer!

I had come up with something very similar in Perl. Will try this solution and see if it is faster.

I tried something in awk.. but its not giving last set properly don't know why..
Code:
awk '{if(NR==1){coli1=$1;coli2=$2;col2=$2}else{if($1==coli1){col2++;{if(col2==$2){cole2=$2}else{{print coli1"("coli2"-"cole2")"};coli2=$2;col2=$2}}}else{{print coli1"("coli2"-"cole2")"};coli1=$1;coli2=$2;col2=$2}}}' filename
