While vgersh99 mentioned colons...

They work great as comments...
Code:
if [ "$X" = 1 ]; then
  # rm -f blah
fi

would give an error, but..
Code:
if [ "$X" = 1 ]; then
  : rm -f blah
fi

wouldn't.

Why not ...

Code:
if [ -f "${filename}" ]
then
       rm -f "${filename}"
fi
