Unix Backbone

Excuse my ignorance, being relatively new at this stuff..
Is it possible that Unix could operate as a backbone server provider to a campus LAN? If so, could UNIX act as the gateway server to the WAN, but provide internet connection to other sub-LAN's which used another bus protocol? (say via Routers).
Also is UNIX compatible with the Gigabit ethernet technology, and would specific protocol software be necessary for operate on a 1000Base-T backbone?

Hi Paul,

Many questions, some answers.
Yes you can very easily set-up a "unix" server as a router without any extra software needed. You do need multiple interfaces of course. Indeed unix is compliant with Gigabit ethernet. It just dependent on the vendor about how to makeuse of it. I know that the SunFire from Sun most of them have a Gigabit OnBoard, and do not need any further configuration.

If you have some more specific questions and a vendor name we should be better to help you.
