help with awk script (if else)

Hi everybody,

I's really appretiate if somebody could help me with the following problem:
I've got file1 like this:
Code:
aaa bbb ccc
hhh eee fff
aaa bbb ccc
aaa bbb ccc
kkk eee fff
aaa bbb ccc
aaa bbb ccc
ooo ppp ccc
qqq www eee

And file2 like this:
Code:
hhh
kkk
ooo
qqq

What I need is if first column of file1 matches the first column of file2, than print "A" otherwise print "B".
I did have a look on the forum and managed to write a little script of my own, but it doesn't work. Here's my script:

Code:

a=awk'{print$1}' file1.txt
b=awk'{print$2}' file2.txt
awk'
if (a==b)
print "A"
else
print "B"' > file3

Then I change the mode to executable and type:
./code file1 file2

and it says command not found.

Thank you for your help in advance!

Could you also post an example (not only description) of the desired output?

Sorry, the output would be:
Code:
aaa bbb ccc B
hhh eee fff A
aaa bbb ccc B
aaa bbb ccc B
kkk eee fff A
aaa bbb ccc B
aaa bbb ccc B
ooo ppp ccc A
qqq www eee A

Also when posting data or logs use code tags - not only when posting code, ty. Smilie

Many thanks!

Use gawk or nawk on Solaris:

Code:
awk 'NR == FNR { _[$1]; next }
$(NF + 1) = $1 in _ ? "A" : "B"
' file2 file1

Notice the order of the input files.

I'm afraid it doesn't work. Here's what my output looks like:

Code:
Ba bbb ccc
 Bh eee fff
 Ba bbb ccc
 Ba bbb ccc
 Bk eee fff
 Ba bbb ccc
 Ba bbb ccc
 Bo ppp ccc
qqq www eee A

Sorry, but being not very expert on UNIX I can't get where the problem is.

Thanks for your help!

Why don't you use the same data files? This is a different data ...

This is what I get using the input files you posted:

Code:
zsh-4.3.10[t]% head file[12]
==> file1 <==
aaa bbb ccc
hhh eee fff
aaa bbb ccc
aaa bbb ccc
kkk eee fff
aaa bbb ccc
aaa bbb ccc
ooo ppp ccc
qqq www eee

==> file2 <==
hhh
kkk
ooo
qqq
zsh-4.3.10[t]% nawk 'NR == FNR { _[$1]; next }
$(NF + 1) = $1 in _ ? "A" : "B"
' file2 file1
aaa bbb ccc B
hhh eee fff A
aaa bbb ccc B
aaa bbb ccc B
kkk eee fff A
aaa bbb ccc B
aaa bbb ccc B
ooo ppp ccc A
qqq www eee A

I do use the files I've put here, but I used awk instead of nawk. I do not have nawk.
Thanks!
