Which Distro of Linux?

On most distro's you can just use their corresponding package managers. You need to search the repos for each distro for the exacts.

Package managers for various Linux Distros:

Debian/Ubuntu: apt-get
Redhat 5/CentOS: yum
Gentoo: emerge

Package managers will install prepackaged versions and the corresponding dependencies.

It depends, again, on the distro.

For Redhat/CentOS (from package manager install):

Code:
/etc/init.d/httpd start

For Debian/Ubuntu (from package manager install):

Code:
/etc/init.d/apache2 start

For Gentoo (from package manager install):

Code:
/etc/init.d/apache2 start
