UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

im getting this error when i try to run this function.

VAR2=`echo $path | sed 's/\//::/$depth;s/^.*:://'`
echo " $VAR1 $VAR2"

done
}


I think I have a syntax error on either Var 1 or Var2. has anyone ideas whats causing the error?

I have not seen multiple sed instructions like this before but I do know that the $depth variable inside the sed statement needs to have single speech marks around it, i.e.:

VAR2=`echo ${path} | sed 's/\//::/'${depth}';s/^.*:://'`

When I do multiple changes in one sed(1) I do this:

$ sed -e s'/a/b/' -e 's/c/d/' < inputfile > outputfile
