Java Completely new to UNIX

This is my first post here, I tried searching the forum and other sites as well - but I still couldn't figure out exactly what UNIX is. I mean like for C programming we Turbo C++ IDE, and in same way different platforms for other languages.

What do we use for UNIX? I'm completely new to UNIX and searching over the sites only made me more confused.. some say it's not a single system, saying things like it comprises Linux, Redhat, etc. But I couldn't understand. I wish to learn working with UNIX and shell programming but I can't figure out - on what?

So, please someone kindly tell me what [software] I should have to work with UNIX.

It's an operating system, like Windows, VMS, Amiga, GeoWorks.

Search all those in wikipedia to get an idea.

Unix is an Operating System developed in the 1970's, Linux is a derivative of that software which uses Open Source Projects to help sustain and improve the platform. Linux as well, has flavors, which are different versions of the Operating System itself, incorporating the same fundamental structure of Linux with their own unique focuses.

For C/C++ programming, you'll want to use gcc which is a compiler built into the operating system.
