I must confess to have no doubt about what's going on.
For some reason fsck does not do what you want. I do not have enough knowledge of Linux (if that is what makes the difference) to help you out here. Maybe a post in the Linux area can give you a solution.

Linux users should be careful not to simily fsck a filesystem *until* they know the filesystem they are using.

If you are using, for example, an journaling filesystem like ext3 , fsck can be potentially more damaging.

What type of filesystem are you using?

If you don't know, try posting the output of:

mount
# 10

/dev/sda7/ on / type ext2 (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw)

Is there a way to salvage it, or should I just reinstall linux? If I thought it wouldn't happen again I would have alredy reinstalled but i plan on running this machine headless and keyboardless and it really can't becrapping out on me like this it has to run stably. Like a good little unix :-)

The linux ext2 filesystem is old, stable and reliable.

I've always been able to repair corrupted ext2 filesystems with e2fsck ...... unless the disk drive was bad.

I really don't think the disk is bad, its worked fine for a long time and I can boot Mac OS fine. How do I use that program you said??
