Telnet FTP scripting

Hi quick question from a unix newbie

Working on a project to get me using unix, the point of this project is to find a printer on the network check for jobs in the printer if the printer has no jobs do nothing if the printer has jobs then check the status for errors and e-mail the user. This has to be done hourly.

Technical side:

How do I write a program that will run hourly in unix.

Originally I was told to telnet to the printer but this would not allow me to login, so i will opt for ftp and netrc but can i run the netrc hourly in a script

Have a gander at "man cron" and "man crontab" (both versions).

The only part in your question that disturbs me is "find a printer". I don't know of any magic for locating printers the computer doesn't already know about. Anyone? Or did you just mean "poll a printer"?

Shouldn't be a prob considering i dont have a clue about Unix, ah well such is life.

Cheers Crig
