perl newbie question

I have the following question in perl, I have come up with couple of solutions,Perl gurus please help me find the best answer to my question?

You have a PERL database named DataEntryData, and you need to separate out the various values from the DB entry $item, delimited by the ^ sumbol. There are 5 values that need to be named, in this order: rectype, subrec, datasrc, keydate, and code1. How can you separate the values and name them correctly in one PERL command?

solution1:
IFS="^"
# $item=rectype^subrec^datasrc^keydate^doce1
# set -- $item
# arr=( $item )
# echo ${arr[0]} ${arr[1]} ${arr[2] ${arr[3] ${arr[4]}

solution2:
IFS=^
echo "$item" | read arr[1] arr[2] arr[3] arr[4] arr[5]
IFS=","

solution3:
(@params) = split('\^',$item);

Thanks for your time.

those solutions seems like multiple choices. please revise your Perl textbook again( if you have played with Perl, you should already know which one of those solution works. )

How did you come up with those solutions? What output do they give?
