unable to set user home dir

I created a new user and changed their home directory to
Code:
/export/home/mydir/

I verified in the passwd file that the home directory is set to the above and that owner of that directory is the new user and yet when I log in as that user I get the following message:
Code:

No directory! Logging in with home=/

Why is this?
thanks

is there a directory "/export/home/mydir/" on your system?

Yes, and it is owned by this new user.

As a side note, this new user is using a restricted shell upon login. Could that have something to do with it?

maybe there is a typo or a space where it shouln't be... i think you've to post the part of "/etc/passwd" with your new user and the output of "ls -l /export/home".

Operating System?
Path of Restricted Shell?
Is this the only account with Restricted Shell?

Have you run "pwck" (password file checker) ?
