Sendmail /VAR/SPOOL/MAIL

Hi,

First Question: In our company our users have their mailboxes in /var/spool/mail
When I look at the users file it seems as if every email sent/received is in that user file! Is this because IMAP is being used or is that just how sendmail works?

Second Question: How is that when I create a user account on the system, the users /var/spool/mail file is created as well?

Its the same on my server, CentOS 5.2.

In /etc/profile MAIL_DIR is set to /var/spool/mail/$USER

Some change this so mail is in the users home directory.

But is the file ever changed?

Yes,

But does the spool file always contain all the emails sent and received? Or is this due to configuration.

On my systems /var/spool/mail/$USER contains Incoming mail.
and /var/spool/mqueue contains outbound mail.

But I am not using IMAP which might contain all sent and received mail. Look at the config for your IMAP server.
